- This year, the line-up of presentations at the London Spanish Book & Zine Fair features internationally acclaimed writer Mónica Ojeda (Ecuador), one of the most distinctive voices in contemporary Latin American narrative, author of Chamanes eléctricos en la fiesta del sol, Las voladoras and Mandíbula, in Conversation with journalist Lala Toutonian.
- Rosario Villajos (Spain), author of La Educación Física and Cortarse el cabello, “posses a narrative with remarkable agility, underpinned by a pitch-black, witty sense of humor / El Cultural”, in Conversation with translator Beth Hickling-Moore.
- A Return to What Matters will bring writer and translator Adam Feinstein exploring León de Greiff’s poetry with Chilean authors Gonzalo C. García and Catherine Bernales Lamig while sharing their experiences of identity, belonging and transformation.
- Round table: To Publish Is to Decide What Is Remembered. Racialised Memory from Academia and Independent Publishing. A publisher’s list is a form of memory: it settles what gets read and, without saying so, what does not. This panel brings together three projects working on memory, racism and diaspora from different positions. Chaired by Jesús Sanjurjo-Ramos with Quinny Martínez Hernández (Plataforma Cero), María del Pilar Kaladeen (Wasafiri Magazine) and Aissata M’ballo Diao (Jaŋde Editorial), the conversation begins with a practical question: What does it take for a story to be published? Archives that stay silent, languages that do not match, funding, distribution and the always political decision of who a text is addressed to.
- Down to Earth. A Poetry Reading Open Mic. An intimate and multilingual celebration of poetry, community and the many ways we remain connected to the earth and to one another. Curated by Newham Poetry Group with the participation of Palacio de Poetas: Amanda Vilanova, Camila de La Parra and María Cuervo; Maru Delgado (Feria Internacional del Libro de Arica and FIP Arica) and Newham Poetry Group’s poets: Charlynne Bryan, Florence Njideka Chukwuonye, Danial, T Balogun, Yvonne Murria, Randolph Salvary and Sonia Quintero. Presented by Sonia Quintero.

Workshops and other activities

- Activities for all tastes will include the following workshops: The Bestiary of London. Families Writing and Collage Workshop with Karina Lickorish-Quinn (Perú / UK). In every culture there are mythological monsters that represent the experiences and fears of the community. In this workshop we are going to draw on monsters and beasts from our cultures and place them in London to explore our fears and experiences of the city.
- Develop and deepen your creativity and writing skills with these amazing workshops in Spanish: Un monstruo que ama las flores: Por una imaginación indócil, a creative writing workshop with Mónica Ojeda and From Sensation to Emotion, a creative writing workshop with Rosario Villajos.
- Join us for this Storytelling session for children in Spanish with teacher Esdian Boyadjian, featuring two inspiring Down to Earth stories: Yaci by Mariana Ruiz-Johnson (Argentina) and La higuera by Juana de Ibarbourou (Uruguay).
About the stories: Yaci by Mariana Ruiz-Johnson. Guarani mythology tells that Yaci, the daughter of the Moon Goddess, descended to the jungle to give us yerba mate. Along the way, the little girl will discover many incredible things about life on Earth. La higuera by Juana de Ibarbourou (Uruguay), an adaptation of the celebrated poem that reflects on beauty, self-esteem, and empathy. - Presentation of the London Spanish Book & Zine Fair will take place on Thursday 1st October at Instituto Cervantes London with the London’s premiere of Vasto Mundo, an animation short film directed by Ande Films based on the comic book Vasto Mundo by Flora Márquez (Argentina). Can the Moon know our deepest fears, joys, and secrets or is it nothing more than an inert, distant, and empty satellite? A philosophical and hopeful journey of questions, but also of answers that invite the audience to participate from their own place and circumstances.

The London Spanish Book & Zine Fair is a project organised by La Tundra, London’s Magazine and Platform in Spanish since 2011. Since 2019, the London Spanish Book & Zine Fair is the first dedicated event to publications (books and fanzines) in Spanish (Bilingual / English translations) in the United Kingdom. The LSBZF is a voluntary non-for-profit organisation.
The official launch will take place on Thursday 1st October at Instituto Cervantes Londres while the Book & Zine Fair will take place on Saturday 3rd October at Conway Hall, London.
